Acne Vulgaris Disease

DESCRIPTION

Common eruptive skin disorder due to clogging or inflammation of the sebaceous glands; usual sites are the face, neck and upper part of chest and back.

Persons most commonly affected:

Adolescents (more than 80% of those between ages 12 and 21 are afflicted), especially boys. However, it can extend to age 25 and over, particularly in women.

Organ or part of body involved:

Skin

Symptoms and indications:

Presence on the skin of blackheads, pustules and whiteheads. The surrounding skin may be inflamed, red and sore, especially with scratching.

Causes and risk factors:

That period of life when a child develops the secondary sex characteristics (such as facial and body hair, deepened voice, and increased muscle mass in boys and breast development and menstruation in girls), blockage of sebaceous glands and the break down of sebum (the secretion of the glands by bacteria) seem to be responsible for the inflammation that causes acne.

There are many misconceptions and rumours about what causes the condition:

Diet:

Chocolate, potato chips and sugar, among others, have not been shown to affect acne. This means that the scientific studies done to date did not find a statistically significant difference between acne in two groups of people, one group eating the food in question and one group avoiding it. However, one recent study, based on a survey of 47,335 women, did find a positive epidemiological association between milk consumption and acne, particularly skimmed. The researchers hypothesize that the association may be caused by hormones (such as bovine IGF-I) present in cow milk; but this has not been definitively shown. Seafood, on the other hand, may contain relatively high levels of iodine, but probably not enough to cause an acne outbreak. Still, people who are prone to acne may want to avoid excessive consumption of foods high in iodine. It has also been suggested that there is a link between a diet high in refined sugars and acne. According to this hypothesis, the startling absence of acne in non-westernized societies could be explained by the low glycemic index of these tribes’ diets. Further research is necessary to establish whether a reduced consumption of high-glycemic foods (such as soft drinks, sweets, white bread) can significantly alleviate acne, though consumption of high-glycemic foods should in any case be kept to a minimum, for general health reasons.

Deficient personal hygiene:

Acne is not caused by dirt. This misconception probably comes from the fact that acne involves skin infections. In fact the blockages that cause acne occur deep within the narrow follicle channel, where it is impossible to wash them away. These plugs are formed by the cells and sebum created there by the body. The bacteria involved are the same bacteria that are always present on the skin. It is advisable to clean the skin on a regular basis, but doing so will not prevent acne. Anything beyond very gentle cleansing can actually worsen existing lesions and even encourage new ones by damaging or overdrying skin.

Sex:

Common myths state that either celibacy or masturbation cause acne and, conversely, that sexual intercourse can cure it. There is no scientific evidence suggesting that any of these are factual. It is true, however, that sexual activity, as well as anger and stress, affect hormone levels and thus bodily oil production, which can cause acne.

Prevention:

Diet alone does not cure acne, nor does acne stem from an allergic reaction to a specific food. However, some cases of acne appear to improve after eliminating certain foods, particularly chocolates, chips, colas, candy and fats. Also avoid artificial sugar substitutes like sacharine or aspartame. Limit intake of dairy products especially of whole, unskimmed milk. Tinned foods should also be avoided. In addition, emotional stress seems to increase the severity of acne in certain cases. Exercise, prayer, reading, and many other techniques can be used to reduce the effects of stress. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and cereals.

Tips:

* Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day.

* Cleanse your face twice a day — first thing in the morning and before going to bed.

Complete Guide to Cure Acne

Acne is the result of high pitta moving under the skin and breaking out in pimples. Ayurveda recommends several natural approaches that, taken together, can effectively control acne.

The possible pitta-provoking causes are numerous. They include emotional stress, premenstrual hormonal changes, and exposure to chemicals or too much sunlight. The problem might also be a bacterial infection. It is important to find out the cause, so it can be properly treated or, in the case of exposure to chemicals or sunlight, simply avoided.

FOLLOW THE PITTA-PACIFYING DIET.

Because acne is a pitta condition, the first step is to follow the pitta-pacifying diet. Avoid spicy and fermented foods, salt, fried foods, and citrus fruits. Favor blander foods such as rice, oatmeal, and applesauce.

USE THESE HERBS TO BALANCE PITTA.

The following formula is excellent for pacifying the excess pitta that causes acne:

Kutki
Guduchi
Shatavari

Make a mixture of equal proportions of these three herbs (you
might start with 1 teaspoon of each), and take ¼ teaspoon of
your mixture 2 or 3 times a day. After meals, place the powder
on your tongue and wash it down with warm water.

• A helpful tea, made from common household herbs, is cumin ,coriander– fennel tea. After each meal, steep ⅓ teaspoon of each of these three seeds in hot water for 10 minutes, strain, and drink. Use this tea 3 times a day.

DRINK BLUE WATER.

Fill a clear glass bottle or jar with water, and cover it with
some translucent blue paper (such as blue cellophane, available at art supply and some grocery stores). Put the bottle in the sun for about 2 hours. Drink 1 to 3 cups of the water each day. This will have a cooling, soothing effect. Believe it or not, it works!

Healing Pastes for Your Skin

Here are three pastes you can make at home and apply to your skin.
They can be effective in reducing acne.

1. Mix 1 teaspoon of chickpea flour (Besan ka ata available at Indian grocery stores and natural food stores) with enough water to make a paste, and wash your face with this mixture. Rinse off, then apply either of the following:

2. Mix almond powder with a little water, and apply the paste to
your face. Let it dry and remain on your skin for up to half an
hour, then rinse it off. (You can easily make the almond
powder yourself in a coffee or nut grinder.)

3. A paste of sandalwood and turmeric powders mixed in goat’s milk is healing for the skin. Take ¼ teaspoon turmeric and ½ teaspoon sandalwood powder, mix them together, and add sufficient goat’s milk to make a paste. Apply this mixture to
your face. Note: Your face will look yellow for some time—up
to 5 days—but this formula is quite effective in alleviating
acne.

DRINK ALOE VERA JUICE.

You might try drinking half a cup of pure aloe vera juice twice a day.

KEEP YOUR COLON CLEAN.

Keeping your colon clean is important, in order to remove toxins from the body. You can easily accomplish this by taking the herb amalaki, ½ to 1 teaspoon daily, as a powder on the tongue. Take it before bedtime, and wash it down with warm water.

APPLY MELON.

Rub some melon on the skin at bedtime, and leave it on
overnight. Its cooling, anti-pitta quality will help heal acne. It also makes the skin soft.

YOGA POSTURES.

Recommended yoga asanas for acne are the Lion Pose and
the sequence of postures called the Moon Salutation.

BREATHING EXERCISE.

Breathing through the left nostril only, for 5 to 10 minutes, will help to reduce pitta. (This is called the Moon Breath and is
said to be cooling; breathing through the right nostril is called the Sun Breath and is heating.) Simply cover the right nostril with your thumb, and breathe normally through the left side. If the nostril is blocked, don’t force it; try again later.

RELAX YOUR FACE.

Rub your hands together vigorously to create a bit of
warmth, and place both hands over your face for a couple of minutes. This will relax the facial muscles and increase the blood supply. You can also rub your hands until the palms become warm, then gently touch just the heart of the palm to the eyelashes. Our eyelashes are intensely electrically charged; they take that warmth and relieve the pitta under the skin that is coming out in the form of acne.

VISUALIZATION.

The root cause of acne is emotional stress. One effective way
to relieve that stress is visualization. Close your eyes and visualize that the acne is clearing up and going away—as if you are communicating with the tissues in your skin that are bursting out in acne. This works. A final suggestion: Avoid frequent looking in the mirror and feeling.

Cress Benefits and How to Grow at Home

Ibn Al Qayyim (rahimuAllah) said that cress is beneficial for the following;

Warming and softening the belly,
Reducing inflammation of the spleen when combined with honey,
Preventing hair loss,
Increasing appetite,
Asthma and clearing the lungs.

He also said that if cress seeds are crushed and drunk with hot water, this is beneficial for colic and vitiligo (a chronic condition that causes pale, white patches to develop on the skin).

Cress (botanical name Lepidum sativum) is commonly known as garden cress and is closely related to mustard and watercress In urdu it is called Kaho. It is an edible plant that, when fully grown, has a peppery flavour and aroma similar to mustard and watercress. It is typically harvested when very young, at the cotyledon leaf stage.

Garden cress contains significant amounts of iodine, iron, calcium, folic acid and vitamins A and C. It is also a source of phytochemicals and antioxidants. It’s the iodine content in cress which is so valuable to the human body in today’s day and age.

According to a study funded by Australia’s Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), the anti cancer effects of garden cress far outweighed that of other green vegetables tested (the study was conducted on cress vs. some common species of brassicas).

How to Grow Cress.

Cress is very easy to grow. It can be grown all year round in any country, indoors or in the garden in Spring. When grown indoors, either seed trays or wet cotton wool in pots are usually used. It is often grown by children as their first introduction to gardening.

To grow cress in seed trays, lightly sprinkle the seeds onto wet cotton wool or a few layers of wet kitchen paper. Keep the seeds moist throughout germination and place the tray in a bright spot, like a south facing windowsill.

The seeds should begin to sprout in around 2 days. Insha’Allah in 5-7 days, the cress should be ready to harvest.

How to use cress.

Both the leaves and stems of cress can be eaten raw in salads or sandwiches, and are sometimes called cress sprouts. They are delicious and as with all sprouted seeds, they are loaded with vitamins and minerals. Eating raw garden cress is beneficial for women with irregular or suppressed menstruation. It is also very beneficial for them when cooked in soups.

According to Ibn Al Qayyim (rahimuAllah) for the treatment of hair loss, the juice of young garden cress is massaged on the scalp and hair. It can be extracted using a juicer. It is also beneficial for hair loss if it is consumed.

The crushed seeds can be steeped in boiling water for 10 mins and drunk as a hot infusion for the treatment of viscous phlegm build up in the chest and lungs (bronchitis, chest infections) by helping the patient cough it out. This decoction also benefits asthma sufferers as does eating raw cress in general.

According to Ibn Al Qayyim (rahimuAllah), patients with sciatica can make a pomade of cress leaves, barley stems and halaal vinegar (blend them to a paste in a food processor) and apply this mixture to the affected area, wrapping it with cling film so that it does not dry out. My personal advice is to leave it for an hour, then wash it off. Used with Hijaama wet cupping, Allah will bring relief insha’Allah.
